I grew up in Leominster, MA and we had a Friendly’s in town. I used to get their swiss patty melts all the time. It is the perfect combination of burger and crispy grilled cheese. Great for a Football game day lunch!
Swiss Patty Melts

Ingredients
- 1 Pound Lean Ground Beef
- ½ onion, sliced thin
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
- Worcestershire Sauce
- Salt & Pepper
- Butter
- 8 Slices Rye Bread
- 8 Slices Swiss Cheese
Instructions
- Form the beef into 4 patties. Try to make them into a rectangular shape so that they are similar shape to the rye bread. Season with salt and pepper.
- Heat a saute pan and add the oil to the pan. Add the burgers and in the corner, add the onions. Stir the onions.
- Cook the burgers for 4 minutes on each side and remove from pan. Remove the onions.
- Wipe the bottom of the pan. Butter 4 slicesof the bread, add to the pan. Add a slice of cheese to each slice of bread, top with the burger, then onions, add a dash of worcestershire, add the second slice of cheese and finally, add the last slice of buttered bread.
- Cook the "grilled cheese burger" on both sides until golden brown.
- Slice and serve with ketchup if desired.
